How often do we just jump in our cars, without a worry or a care? Too often I think! Passenger cars have made our lives so much easier in so many ways, but unfortunately, they have become so common place in our lives, that we forget the many dangers that come with being on the road.

My Five Tips for Safety

1. Always keep your car well maintained. Brakes, tires, oil, etc. If our cars aren't in top notch condition, then we are asking for trouble. Regular routine maintenance is so much easier, cheaper, and SAFER, than waiting until a break down. Check your cars manual for recommended mileage checks, and if you aren't handy dandy with automobiles, get to know a local mechanic that you can trust.

2. Be prepared. Especially if you are in areas with snow and ice. Keep an emergency kit in your car - preferably within easy reach. If you become stranded, it may not be in an area where it's safe to get out of your car, to retrieve a kit that's stowed in the trunk. Bottled water, blankets ("space blankets" are inexpensive and easy to store), protein bars, first aid kit, hand warmers, heavy duty flashlight, extra batteries, jumper cables, duct tape, screw driver, and small foldaway shovel, are a good start.

3. NO texting while driving EVER. Not only is this a safety issue but in many states, it's illegal!

4. Always wear seat-belts, and make sure that they are worn properly. Double check installation of car and booster seats. If you are unsure if your child should be in a car seat, booster seat, or just seat-belted in, you can go here to find lots and lots of useful information.

5. Keep Calm and Carry On, has become a very popular mantra...and rightly so. Hot tempers, short fuses, and an attitude of get out of my way, has led to an outbreak of road rage. There is no place that is so important to get to to allow yourself to loose control of your emotions, and throw caution to the wind. Keep your wits about you. Take some deep breaths. Hum a tune. Count to ten. DO NOT use profanity, or rude hand gestures. If your children are in the car with you, you certainly don't want to display this kind of behavior. They are our future drivers, and so often what they see, will be what they do.

My Review:

By chapter 2, I felt like I was a part of the Lapp family!

That's the sign of a good book.

I'm a long time fan of Suzanne Woods Fisher's writing,

and THE KEEPER has kept me a fan.

Wholesome, entertaining, informative, and makes you feel good!

What more can you ask for?

What is it, that draws us to the Amish?

I know that I love, and wouldn't want to give up

my modern conveniences...but the sense

of community, and a kinder, more gentle way of life,

has a very strong pull.

THE KEEPER, tells a story that many can relate to.

Family, illness, tragedy, perseverance, and of course, love.

It weaves us in and out of the daily lives of

Amos, Julia, Menno, Sadie, M.K. and Uncle Hank...

just like Fern and Roman, weave their way

into the Lapp's lives.

I really liked that Woods Fisher, didn't portray

the English (and our way of life), as needing to be shunned,

and kept as far away as possible.

What's the Best Way to Know If You Have a Food Allergy?

The ancient Greek saying, “Know thyself,” is certainly true about food allergies. For good health, it is vital to know if we have food allergies; thus we can eliminate problem foods in order to prevent developing health problems. Many disorders treated with potentially harmful drugs and surgery may be caused or exacerbated by food allergies. These problems can be managed more safely by changing the diet. Over seventy medical conditions are thought to be associated with food allergies. These conditions can be respiratory (hayfever, asthma, bronchitis, recurring ear infections, sinus conditions, rhinitis, laryngitis, allergic sore throat, hoarseness); digestive (gastroenteritis, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, diarrhea, constipation, colic, malabsorption); cerebral (headaches, dizziness, sleep disorders, learning disorders, tension-fatigue syndrome, foggy thinking, irritability, depression); skin-related (dermatitis, eczema, angioedema, hives, rashes); or related to other body systems (arthritis, fibromyalgia, urinary irritation, conjunctivitis, edema, hypoglycemia, diabetes, overweight, underweight, premenstrual syndrome, fatigue). This list is not exhaustive. Virtually any symptom can be associated with food allergy or intolerance. By identifying and eliminating or treating food allergies, many of our seemingly insolvable chronic health problems can be improved or even eradicated.

The gold standard method of diagnosing food allergies is elimination and challenge testing. Since some people have potentially life-threatening reactions to the challenge, do not try this at home unless you have been advised to do so by a doctor who has determined that your response to the test will not be dangerous. Both elimination and challenge and provocation-neutralization testing (discussed below) have been proven effective for the diagnosis of food allergies by double blind clinical trials.

There are several variations in how an elimination and challenge test is done. Individuals who have severe reactions and are likely to be allergic to a number of foods may be hospitalized, fast for several days, and then, under medical supervision, eat suspected problem foods one at a time with a few days between each challenge. An outpatient variation on this is for a person to eat an elimination diet of rare foods for five to ten days and then eat suspect foods one at a time in pure form to detect reactions. For more about this, refer to Detecting Your Hidden Food Allergies by William Crook, M.D. (This book is fancifully illustrated and, unfortunately, out of print, but used copies are available). A third variation is to eliminate one suspect food from the diet (completely, in all its forms, both pure and hidden in other foods) for five days and then to eat it in pure form. For all of these variations, the patient must wait a few days and watch for delayed reactions before testing another food. If you need to test more than a few foods, elimination and challenge testing can disrupt your life for quite a while.

A second well-respected method of allergy testing is provocation-neutralization testing (P/N, also called SET for serial endpoint titration) which is done in a doctor’s office. Foods are tested one at a time. A small amount of an extract of each food is injected subcutaneously under the patient’s skin. If the test is positive, it causes a skin reaction and also usually causes the patient’s typical allergy symptoms. Then smaller doses of the extract are injected until a “neutralizing dose” is found which turns off the reaction. Each food test may take an hour if positive, but tests can be done sequentially in the day. Provocation-neutralization testing detects reactions caused by both IgE and IgG antibodies. The injection sites are observed over the next few days to detect delayed or cell mediated reactions. Intradermal tests (also called scratch tests) are not useful for diagnosing food allergies because they only detect IgE reactions, which account for only about 5% of food reactions.

The least time consuming and easiest tests for food allergies are blood tests. These tests vary in the types and number of mechanisms for food allergies they detect, and thus their accuracy also varies. Some doctors use them but recommend that positive results be verified by elimination and challenge testing. York Laboratories (www.yorkallergyusa.com/) offers blood tests for food allergies that you can order online without a doctor’s prescription. Although blood tests are not 100% accurate, they do test for many foods. The types of tests above, because they are more time consuming, usually test for a few dozen foods at most. If you eliminate foods that show up as major problems on your blood test and rotate all other foods, you can watch your symptoms and rule out or in food allergies without doing a formal challenge test. It is highly advisable to follow an allergy rotation diet if you are allergic to more than just a few foods to prevent the development of new food allergies. If you plan to discuss allergy testing with a conventional doctor, be prepared for possible difficulties. One problem may be that the doctor does not “believe in” food allergies and may tell you that they are very rare among adults. You may be told that you cannot possibly have an allergy because your reactions are delayed or don’t involve typical allergy symptoms such as hives, near-immediate diarrhea or vomiting, asthma or other breathing problems, or anaphylaxis.

Another problem you may encounter is disagreement about the definition of food allergy. Conventional doctors often make a distinction between reactions that are mediated by IgE antibodies, which they consider “true” allergies, and reactions mediated by IgG antibodies, cell mediated immunity or other mechanisms. They call these reactions sensitivities or intolerances. In spite of attempts to marginalize them, these types of reactions can cause chronic health problems just as serious or even more serious than some IgE mediated allergies. The reluctance of the medical establishment to diagnose food allergies and add avoidance of problem foods to their patients’ health-improvement arsenal, in my opinion, is a contributing factor to our national epidemic of increasing overweight and associated conditions such as diabetes. I believe that there are many adults who suffer from undiagnosed food allergies. Their allergies can cause allergic cravings, which drive them to overeat their problem foods. In addition, eating a food one is allergic to causes the adrenal glands to release hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline which set off a hormonal cascade that inhibits the burning of body fat. Furthermore, the inflammation that results from allergic reactions makes our master weight control hormone, leptin, function less effectively. Therefore, for best health, control of chronic illness, and normal weight, do not ignore signs of food allergies your body may be giving to you. If you can’t afford or don’t have time for doctor-administered food allergy testing, consider a blood test followed by a rotation diet. See how you feel after you eliminate all of your problem foods. It may be better than you have felt in a long time, with effortless achievement of a healthy weight as part of the benefit.

Individuals with food allergies face additional weight-loss challenges such as inflammation due to allergies which can lead to our master weight control hormone, leptin, being unable to do its job of maintaining a healthy weight. Those with gluten intolerance often eat a diet too high rice. Rice is the only grain which is high on the glycemic index in its whole grain form; thus eating too much of it will raise insulin levels and cause the body to deposit fat. Although the recipes in this book were developed for those on special diets, non-sensitive people will enjoy them as well, and the weight loss principles in this book will help anyone lose weight. The most frustrating deficiency of conventional weight loss diets is that they don’t work long-term. Low-calorie, low-fat diets can lead to loss of muscle mass, and with less muscle to burn calories, this type of diet effectively reduces metabolic rate so we need less food. Rare is the person who loses weight by counting calories and keeps it off after they liberalize their diet! However, continual dieting for the rest of your life is not the way you need to live, and you do not have to be deprived of pleasure in order to lose weight. Overweight is not due to a lack of willpower. Rather, it is due to a chemical imbalance in our bodies. One Little Word = One BIG Decision

I so want to sign up for Ali Edward's

One Little Word 2012 Class on Big Picture

I just don't have the money to join right now,

but I plan on signing up, as soon as I can.

I've struggled on choosing my

One Little Word.

Over the last few years, life has gotten harder for me.

Physically - Medically - Emotionally

I've gained so much weight, I'm in constant pain, and I have

no energy at all. My mind is often cloudy, and I hate

being confused and forgetful.

I also hate being a burden on my husband.

I don't have total control over my situation,

but there are things that I can do, to make things better,

so after much consideration and prayer I've chosen

HEALTHIER

as my One Little Word.

I know that I can't accomplish my One Little Word on my own...

so I will continue to seek care from my doctor, along with taking my medications....

AND

I am also going to work at changing my lifestyle.

I realize that this isn't going to happen overnight. In reality,

this may take years, so I will be setting small goals.

My first "goal" will be to get through the next 4 months.

My friend, Malana, is going to be my main coach and mentor.

It's not that I have nothing to say,

My Review:

If you, are a cat lover, or someone you love, is a cat fancier, then this book needs to be on your holiday shopping list. If you aren't a cat lover, this book may just turn you into one.

It kind of reminds me of the concept of the TV comedy, Seinfield...a story about absolutely nothing...but actually, it's about everything. Lives lived. The ups and downs, and ins and outs of ordinary days, that often add up to extraordinary experiences. Love between people, love between animals,

and the family bonds of all involved.

The photo's are extraordinary, as they capture the true essence of cat. The artwork is an odd combination of country, with an ethereal quality..

that fits like a tailor made glove.

Like the author, my pets are my family. I love them dearly

and they bring happiness and comfort to me, in a way

that can hardly be explained with words.

Deborah Barnes managed to do what I can't!

Her words flow straight from her heart onto the pages.

Tropical Traditions Coconut Flour Review

I just haven't been feeling well enough to bake anything for the holidays,

but my husband was taking his admins out to lunch today,

and I knew that he wanted to give them a little goody.

I remembered that Tropical Traditions had sent me

a bag of organic coconut flour to try

(and I feel so badly, that I haven't posted about it until now),

so I decided to use it to make some banana bread.

First a little bit about Tropical Traditions organic coconut flour...

Organic coconut flour is fiber from the coconut meat
after most of the oil has been extracted.
It's gluten-free, high in fiber and high in protein.

I love coconut...the aroma, flavor and texture,

but now everyone does.

Substituting part of the regular flour with the coconut flour

seemed to be the perfect fit.

It's not so strong to overpower the batter, but adds just

a subtle yummy taste, that I think even a non coconut lover, would like.

It turned out great!
(I'm just kicking myself in the butt, for not using some of my
Tropical Traditions Gold Label TM Virgin Coconut Oil

in place of canola oil...but I'm going
to be sure to use it along with more organic coconut flour, when I
make coconut pancakes, this weekend:-)

OMGosh - this stuff drives my doggies insane! You would think that I'm feeding

them Prime Rib with Liver, and Chicken. They go complete wild, as soon as I start squirting it onto their food.

The pump bottle is drip less, as stated in the information from the company, but

to be perfectly honest - it isn't ODOR LESS. For a few minutes after feeding your, your house will smell like you've made a bowl of tuna salad...but in my humble opinion,that isn't a bad thing at all.

I made the mistake of using the Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil, on all the dogs food. so it is running out quickly. It would be great if Nutri-Vet offered larger refill bottles (maybe quart or even gallon size), for multiple pet homes. Due to the short time frame , that I've been using the Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil, I can't for sure say that everyone's coat has improved, but, I have noticed that Gabe's skin, is no where near as dry and flaky as it has been.

If you have a picky eater, I would bet my bottom dollar (which is about all I have right now:-) that using the Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil, would perk up his or her appetite!

It left no "color" on my face, but stung just a week bit,

for the first minute or so, the first few times that I used it.

I'm thinking that this is because it was working against

life long neglect of my skin.

My Take:

I thought that the Replenishing Moisturizer would smell

the same as the Botanical Cleanser, and the Camu C Serum,

but I found it to have more of a vanilla undertone.

Ha-Ha - I think that I have food on the brain.

It reminded me of the aroma of a fresh baked lemon poppyseed muffin.

It was sort of a spicy mustard color, and went on like silk.

Earthy colors, soft aromatic scents, and 100% organic ingredients.

I felt pampered, and my skin seems to be improving.

It's great that I will have these wonderful products to nourish my skin,

during the winter months, that are so drying.
